4.2 Mesoscale Mechanism for Surface Aeration of High-Velocity Flows

Ehrenberge (1927) was the first to describe the physical cross-sectional structure of a self-aerated flow along the flow depth direction. Later, researchers basically followed Ehrenberger’s stratification method for self-aerated flows and believed that a typical self-aerated flow can be divided into four layers, namely, a water-droplet leaping layer (top layer), an air-water mixture layer (middle layer), an air-bubble suspension layer (bottom layer), and a possible bottommost clear-water layer (Fig. 4.1).
