CHAPTER 9

DON'T WANT YOU GETTING TWITCHY.

MERLIN

"I think it's best if you sit with Lance for this." As much as I wanted Gwen with me, we couldn't risk her sneezing and blowing the spell into exploding.

"Mine." Lance growled as he pulled Gwen into his lap.

"If we had another chair, I could sit on my own." Gwen grumbled as Lance wrapped his arms around her and interlocked their fingers.

"Don't want you getting twitchy." Lance murmured into her ear. She shot me a glare as she relaxed into the shifter.

I shrugged as I set the large, shallow bowl on the table. "It's only ever been Arthur and I. We never needed more than two chairs."

"And it helps keep unwanted villagers away." Arthur groused as he settled back on his bed. He rested his arm over his eyes as he tried to ignore us. Gwen struggled to hold back her laugh, but her eyes didn't hold back. I could clearly see her amusement at Arthur's grumpy quip.

"Now that he's fulfilled his daily dose of a surly asshole, we can get back to my modified scrying. The last time I did this, I accidentally contacted with three high school students in a place called Texas. Long story short, we agreed to help each other. I answered several questions for a historical project and they followed up on some leads for me." I sprinkled several enchanted herbs into the bowl while chanting the incantation I'd modified. Originally, this only worked on one side or the other, but I changed out some of the words which let the spell cross through to the other side of Avalon's barrier.

Gwen leaned forward, watching my every move as I poured enough water to cover the bottom surface of the bowl and make the herbs float. I corked the rest of the water and set it aside for future use. Lunar water was too precious to waste. While it was rather simple to make, the intention is what made it valuable. Discarding the remains would weaken the new batches I made, and I couldn't risk that. Besides, I'd taken it from the Lady of the Lake's spring, and her wrath was enough of a reason to avoid it.

Dripping in a few drops of enchanted oil, I finished reciting the spell. The oil swirled in the water, catching the herbs and bringing them into the circle the oil cut through the water. As the water spun around the oil, it created a completely dry circle in the middle of the bowl. The brown color of the wooden bowl faded until it was a solid bright white, then faded into a pale view of three teenagers sitting at a table with books.

"Wow." Gwen murmured.

The boy glanced right at us, then waved awkwardly. "He's back."

Both of the girls leaned closer to him to peer through the portal. "Hi Merlin!" they called in unison.

I waved at them. "Abel, Gracie, and Bayleigh, how have you been?"

Bayleigh elbowed Abel out of the way as she showed me a blue crystal she wore as a necklace.
