Gryllus was trembling with excitement. âBring me a pot of honey,â he said, snapping his fingers loudly.
âHoney? Where am I to find that?â
âDonât ask me. Just do it.â
I was not his slave, or anybodyâs. But just at that moment I welcomed the chance to escape. I slipped from the room and found the tavern-keeper, who smirked when he heard my request. It cannot have been all that unusual, as he had what I wanted behind the counter. I took the jug he gave me and carried it to the back room. When I pulled the curtain aside, the scene had changed. Basil was slumped on a couch, the African curled up at his feet like a faithful dog. Michael was naked, and lay face down, with his own African poised over him. Gryllus had lifted up his tunic, and was trying to interest the third African in whatever it was that nestled among the folds of fat around his groin. Seeing me, Gryllus grabbed the jug and upended it, pouring the contents over his stumpy penis. He reached out, gripping the African by the ears, pulling him down, encouraging him to lap up the sweet honey.
I looked away, but what I saw was worse. Michael, young ruler of the greatest empire in the world, was allowing himself to be penetrated by a black slave. All around me, moist flesh slapped and slithered, couches creaked, and grunts of pleasure escaped from parted lips. I saw and heard it all, but understood nothing. How could Michael prefer that African to the fair and lovely Eudocia? And how could I face her after what I had seen?
