CHAPTER SIX

CHANEY’S heart slammed against her chest. “Bad idea.”

“Seems like a damn good one to me.”

“Not as long as I’m working for you.”

Drake arched a brow. “I’m not your boss.”

“Semantics.” She struggled to hold on to a firm grasp of reality. But his finger, callused not smooth, lightly rubbing her face felt so good. “You own the cable channel. You’re the executive producer of the show.”

“You don’t report to me.”

He closed the space between them until his face was mere inches from hers. Chaney’s heart felt as if it might explode from pounding so fast. “But—”

“You’re leaving tomorrow.”

She was. “I’m on the payroll until then.”

“A kiss,” he said. “Think about it.”

Heaven help her, but she was thinking about it. Just the thought heated the blood pulsing through her veins.

“What harm could come from one little kiss?” he asked.

Oh, she so wanted to believe him. But practicality pushed its way through his hypnotic charm. “Think Helen of Troy and Paris, Guinevere and Lancelot, Tristan and Isolde, Romeo and Juliet.”

“That’s a no then,” Drake said.

Chaney said nothing. She couldn’t. A part of her wanted to run far, far away. But another part wanted to kiss him so she’d know, know that what she’d walked away from four years ago wasn’t worth dwelling on, know he wasn’t really anything special now.

“Chaney…”

The affection in his voice made it difficult for her to remain immune from his charm. From him. She didn’t want to give in to temptation even though she was flying home tomorrow and wouldn’t be seeing him again. She was too afraid of being hurt.

Still her gaze kept returning to his lips. Lips she’d memorized years ago and dreamed about even now.

“If Guinevere were here, she would allow Lancelot to kiss her.” Drake cupped Chaney’s face lightly. “You agreed to be Guinevere tonight.”

The desire in his eyes both thrilled and frightened her. Her resolve weakened. She didn’t want to give up so easily. “For a noble knight, you’re not playing fair.”

His warm breath fanned her cheek. “One kiss is more than fair, my queen.”

Anticipation shot from her lips all the way down to her toes. She swallowed. “Just one kiss?”

“Only one.” He lowered his hand. “A goodbye kiss.”

Slowly, as if giving her the chance to say no or back away again, he brought his mouth toward hers.

Every nerve ending tingled in hope. But a voice—common sense, perhaps?—shouted a warning.

Too late. She raised her chin and closed her eyes.

His lips touched gently against hers, as if joining something delicate or fragile.

Light, soft, tender.

His mustache and beard brushed her skin. She was surprised how soft the hair was. Not quite a ticklish feather, but not a scratchy whisker, either.

He kept his lips on hers, gentle yet firm.

The way he kissed made her feel cherished and adored, and she liked thinking he cared for her in that way. An inviting warmth, like a sunny day after a rainstorm, settled over her, making her feel as if she’d finally reached the destination she’d been seeking.

Drake kept his hands at his sides and only touched her with his lips.
