There was truth. The truth was: Marvin’s scat wasn’t right. The pits were growing. The rocks I’d put on the rim on Wednesday were at least two inches inside the holes by Thursday.

The truth was: I had to find Marvin soon.

He’d been gone for four days and I didn’t believe Tommy or his new friends had killed him. Marvin was smarter than to fall for a few old dumb trap ideas. The answer was down by the river and I knew it. I wasn’t allowed past the train tracks—I knew that too. But I thought fearless, daring, brave boys should break rules.

I walked from Marvin’s bathroom through Phase Three toward the river. The workmen had all gone home but I could see they’d been digging out stumps, fixing the bank to Gilbrand Road, and marking out lots. The lots by the river were the biggest lots, which meant bigger New Spacious Homes! would drown in the next big hurricane. Not like I wished that on anyone, but it just seemed stupid that people would build a house on a floodplain. Crops loved floodplains. Houses, not so much.

The workmen had carved out a new road down by the last batch of lots on Phase Three. It was one of those loop roads—it would only take you to those houses and then come back up to the main road again. I imagined the road would be called Drowning House Road. That’s what I would call it, anyway.
