Chapter 8

Ethan

We lay in bed together all night talking about our lives.

She tells me how her mom left her when she was just a young girl and how she never knew her father. Her grandmother raised her, and despite how crazy she was, she did the best she could. I find out Mia is just twenty and this is her first year of college. She’s going to school to for marketing and design.

I can listen to her talk about herself all night—and I do.

I can hear how passionate she is and how smart she. She tells me all about small side jobs she picked up re-designing small businesses media design to help them market their companies better. The girl has a bright future ahead of her, I have no doubt.

I tell her more about my family and how close we are. But the second we get into that territory, I see the sadness in her eyes. It makes me realize she is all alone in this world. She has never had a mother or a family to spend time with. No holiday dinners or vacations away. My heart aches for how much she has missed out on.

I swear on everything in that moment that if she will let me, I will make sure she is never alone again. I will give her all the family her little heart can take. I will give her the biggest holidays and all the vacations she can handle. I will give her the world if she will let me. All I want is to make her happy for the rest of our lives.

My parents are two of the happiest people I know and my sisters and I give them hell for all their PDA. I think I get it now. When dad tells the story about the first time he met our mother and how he just knew she was the one, we all roll our eyes.

His love at first sight story is his favorite one to tell. I never thought you could fall in love so instantly. Now, I know better. I know it can happen and when it does it’s scary but damn it feels good.

Mia is everything I have dream of and everything I want my life to be about.

I’m trying so hard not to scare her and push too fast. If I could have my way, I would take her to the courthouse and put my last name on her immediately. She might think I’m crazy, but the only thing I am is crazy about her.

I wake early so I can fix her coffee and breakfast. I clean up the mess from last night, even though I think about leaving it. I want to spend as much time with her here in our little bubble as I can. But reality is calling and there are things I need to take care of.

I pack up my stuff and set it by the door, getting the house ready for another five months of being empty.
