Later that night, still grounded, Clara called Chris’s house first, because she knew he was less likely than Gary to be sitting down to a family dinner. The phone rang and rang, but no one answered, and it didn’t go to voice mail. She wished he had a cell phone. Next she called Gary and explained what she suspected—that there was a wooden puzzle box hidden in the town diorama, perhaps with the missing book inside.

“That makes sense,” Gary said. “What if someone had been told to look for the book in the church, or under the tomb, or whatever, and they didn’t realize they were supposed to look in the diorama, not the real tomb? I mean, it could even have been one of Constance’s prophecies. She’s not always a hundred percent clear about what she’s seeing.” He sounded more impressed with himself for understanding this about the box than with Clara for discovering its whereabouts.

“Now we just have to…break into the school or something,” Clara said.

Gary cleared his throat. “I think I have an idea.”
