Chapter 11

Maxon

The Seaview Hospital for Weres is located in the neutral zone and seated on the same slice of oceanfront land that houses the orphanage run by Momma Jean. I’ve been here more times than I can count.

Weres don’t get human illnesses. They heal with incredible speed, days turn to hours because we’re shifters, but we still bleed, and not all wounds bleed blood.

Naomi’s room is homey. There’s a pullout sofa I’ve been using to rest when I can. It’s three days post-surgery, and I haven’t left her side—not when I might miss those few gaps in sleep when she opens her pretty green eyes and looks for me. I want to be here to show her it’s killing me inside to see her still suffering still. I’m thinking I should be admitted for mental stress or madness because, even as I stare down at our baby I’m holding, I realize if Naomi dies, this child is the only thing left of her. That fact would destroy me.

“Maxon…”

I lean down, letting the whisper of Naomi’s breath fan against my cheek. “I’m right here.”

“You look tired. Have you eaten?”

It’s like she can’t stop thinking of others, even when she’s in such a serious condition, her fever still hovering on the fringe of normalcy for our kind.

“I’m good,” I lie. I’m nowhere near satisfied with what went down and the repercussions that’ll catch up with me sooner than later.

I’ve been too quiet, withdrawing into myself. She scrunches her forehead, rummaging around in my mind for few moments before she pulls away.

I don’t want her to concentrate on my angst when she needs to focus on herself. She cracks open her eyes and stretches out her hand, summoning me closer. “You’re holding our baby. I knew you could do it, be a good daddy to her. Can I kiss her?”

I’ve barely held our daughter, barely know her. I tip my arms, reaching across the railing to show her our precious girl. I lay her close enough for Naomi to press a gentle kiss on her pudgy little cheek.

“She has your eyes. They’re dark green, and she has your sass, and your fight,” I choke out, as emotion crowds my throat.

“She’s both of us….”

“Then we’re all in trouble,” I joke for the first time, alluding to the future I’m still willing to fight for. But, I don’t want a future where our baby is left dealing with my screw-ups, which is why I have to come up with a plan to make things right. I take her hand, holding it until she falls asleep, and her hand goes slack in mine.

The door to the room swings open just as my cell phone buzzes, and I let Acheron’s call go to voicemail. He’ll track me down eventually. Right now, I have to put my family first—Naomi and this pup.

Momma Jean enters with the small bag in one hand and a food sack in the other. A thick French roll sandwich peeks out the top, which she sets beside me.
