Chapter Five

IVY

Ispent the morning in the kitchen while Lennox attended his virtual conference. My mind kept ping-ponging back to our X-rated makeout session, so I needed to focus on another thing besides sex that I enjoyed doing.

I told Lennox I’d make lunch. I decided to try new recipes with the ingredients originally intended for the cancelled dinner party. I put a turkey in the oven to roast. Minestrone soup simmered atop the stove. I chopped up vegetables and cubed some cheese to go with the cuts of deli meat to make a Christmas tree-shaped charcuterie board.

Those inspirational boards on the internet had nothing on me today. Between Christmas playlists of R&B hits and old standards, I danced in the kitchen while cooking.

I took a little break around noon and watched a sweet holiday romantic comedy in the guest room. As I lay curled on the bed with my tablet, my mind returned to Lennox. I wanted him to kiss me again. I wanted to know what it felt like to be with him.

The movie ended two hours later. I meandered back into the kitchen to find the trunk and the left side of my Christmas charcuterie tree gone. An empty bowl and the ladle I used to make the minestrone soup sat in the kitchen sink. Lennox must have been famished.

Sunshine poured through the kitchen windows, the first time since the blizzard began. Snow continued to fall, yet instead of the whiteout conditions earlier, it was a peaceful winter wonderland outside. The roads looked like they were beginning to thaw. Maybe they’d be passable in the morning.

I went through my bowls and utensils until I found what I needed to hold the ingredients. By the time the turkey was done slow roasting and the rest of dinner prepared, I had the batter for chocolate chip, sugar, and snickerdoodle cookies ready for the oven.

“What’s all this?”

I paused at the sound of Lennox’s voice. He entered the kitchen, his jaw slack as he scanned all the food cooling on the counter.

“It’s Christmas Eve. I figured since we can’t go out to celebrate, we might as well enjoy staying in.”

He circled the kitchen island, his eyes darting from the turkey to me. I couldn’t tell if the look of hunger was for the bird or me.

“I just ate half a prosciutto and cheese Christmas tree and two bowls of soup for lunch.”

I gave a helpless shrug. “That was hours ago.”

He plucked a buttered croissant from the bread tray. “So much for keeping up my fitness regimen this season.”

“Please. Your abs will incinerate the calories of that little soft croissant.”

“You’d be surprised by my weakness for soft things.” He looked at me while taking a bite.

I lifted the bowl of mac and cheese to avoid melting into a puddle of blubbering bashfulness. “Since you’re worried about losing your physique, help me carry the turkey into the dining room. That should count as a couple reps,
