Max said good-bye to Tisa and Siobhan.
âYour gear is already stowed on board,â Charl told her. âWe knew weâd be shipping out sometime tonight after the party. The arrival of Dr. Zimm just accelerated our schedule. The pilots collected all your belongings from Siobhanâs house.â
âThey put my suitcase on the plane?â asked Max.
âYes,â said Isabl. âAll your souvenirs are safe.â
âAnd you need to add another one,â said Siobhan. âI plucked this for you when we were in that sheep meadow.â
âThen I showed her how to press and dry it,â said Tisa. âWe went with the technique of pressing it between two sheets of wax paper in a heavy bookâfollowed by a quick spritz of Mrs. McKennaâs hair spray.â
âItâs a four-leaf clover, Max,â said Siobhan. âMay it bring you the same sort of luck that found me and my family the day I met you.â
âThank you,â said Max, giving each of the girls a tight hug. After all theyâd been through together, Siobhan and Tisa felt like sisters to her. Max mightâve been an orphan, but she was definitely starting to build a family of her own.
âYou got anything for me?â asked Klaus.
âNo,â said Siobhan, âbut Iâll have my mam send you some of those sausages you love so much once you lot are settled in your new location.â
âAwesome!â
The jet door opened and unfolded its staircase.
âTime to head out,â Isabl said to Max and Klaus. âIâll need your phones.â
âWhy?â wondered Max.
âIn case Lenard is tracking them,â said Charl.
Max and Klaus handed Isabl their phones. She placed them into foil-wrapped, signal-blocking pouches.
âKind of extreme, donât you think?â said Klaus.
âNot if thereâs a leak,â said Max.
Klaus shrugged. âWhatever. Be careful with that,â he told Isabl as she slid his phone into an aluminum sleeve. âItâs brand new.â
Mr. McGregor and a police officer from the village arrived to pick up Siobhan and Tisa.
Klaus, Isabl, Charl, and Max climbed aboard the small jet and strapped themselves into their seats. Max waved good-bye through her window to Siobhan and Tisa. As the jet lifted off, she also silently said âGood-byeâ to the lush green landscape of Ireland.
âSo where are we flying?â asked Klaus.
Isabl checked her watch. âIâll let you know in an hour.â
âHow long is the flight going to take?â
âTwelve hours.â
âIs there food in the galley?â
Isabl nodded.
âGood. Wake me up when itâs time for breakfast.â
Klaus fluffed a pillow, pulled up his blanket, and quickly fell asleep.
âYou should get some rest, too, Max,â suggested Charl.
âI will,â she said. But she was too mentally jazzed to nod off like Klaus just did. (He was already snoring.)
First, she hadnât completely processed the encounter with Dr. Zimm and his humanoid helper, Lenard. All that stuff heâd said about âredeemingâ Dr. Einsteinâs quantum physics mistakes. âYou are his true heir, Max,â heâd said. âYou can take the theory the great Einstein couldnât quite grasp and bring it to life!â
While Einstein knew that the math behind quantum mechanics worked, he couldnât accept the weirdness of it. âQuantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But
