“So, I’ll see you later?” I asked, unable to keep a bit of vulnerability from leaking into my tone.

Mack’s smile softened as she squeezed my fingers. “I’ll be back as soon as I can. I’d stay if I could,” she added.

I pulled her closer and wrapped my arms around her. “You don’t need to rile up your family just to run patrol with me.”

“I’d rather be running laps around the pack than having dinner with them anyway,” she mumbled into my chest.

I laughed and squeezed her tighter. “And I’d rather be having dinner with you and your family.”

“The invitation is still open,” she said, pulling away from me with a hopeful smile. “Family dinner would be one-hundred times better with you there.”

My gut twisted at the same time my heart jumped. “I’m sorry. I can’t.”

Her grin dimmed, but she nodded. “I get it.”

My phone chimed, and I pulled it out to see a text from Bea.

Can you come to my office?

“That’s Bea,” I said, looking up to find her brows bunched. “I need to go talk to her before patrol.”

Her expression cleared and she took a step back. “Okay. I’ll see you later, then.”

I watched her take another step away before I grabbed her hand and yanked her back. My lips landed on Mack’s, making her gasp in surprise. I deepened the kiss, making sure she knew exactly how much I’d miss her while she was gone.

Mack sighed when I finally pulled away. “I should really go,” I said.

Her pink lips twitched with a grin as she looked at me. “Go on then and quit kissin’ me.”

A laugh ripped from my gut before I could stop it. Her smile was so wide, all I could think about was kissing her some more. I shrugged. “Can’t help it.” Her grin turned soft again, and I had to turn away. “I’ll see you later,” I called over my shoulder before I could find another reason to kiss her.

She giggled, but I heard the crunch of her feet over the gravel lot and listened to her start up her car before I got to the estate doors. I turned in time to watch her drive out of the lot, wishing I was going with her.

With a sigh, I walked into the monstrous home and headed to Bea’s office. She answered my knock almost immediately, and I opened the door to find her and her mate. “Hey,” I said as I shut the door and took a seat. “What’s up?”

The two alphas exchanged a loaded look, and I sat up straighter in my chair.

“We’ve become aware of a situation we think you should know about,” Bea said.

“Okay,” I said slowly.

Will tossed a newspaper onto the desk in front of me, and I glanced at the headline.

Charlotte’s Wolf Problem Worsens.

Third animal-related death this week.

My heart fell to the pit of my stomach as I remembered the last time I saw headlines like this. “You think this is someone in the pack?” I asked as I picked up the paper.
