Chapter 9

The sheriff pulled into the gravel drive of the Morgan clan’s home, seeing the males standing on their large porch as he approached the house. He had no idea why he’d been requested, but he knew it was important to them. They wouldn’t call him unless it was.

He exited his patrol car and left his hands out where they could see them. He left his service weapon in his car. The grizzlies were volatile, and they would turn on you in a second. So, he kept his hands out of his pockets and stopped once he reached the first porch step.

“You wanted to see me?” he asked, trying to judge their expressions, but he couldn’t. They were all stoic. Even Luca O’Kelly. He was the newest to join the clan, staying after his brother had been killed by human hunters two years ago almost to the day.

“Come inside,” Drake grumbled. “What we need to ask of you is not meant for porch talk.”

Garrett waited for the males to enter, and when they sat at their large kitchen table, their mates were already there. He was surprised to see Mara Wood in her own seat. How did the vampire girl get in with the bears?

“Mara?” he asked without thinking twice about uttering her name.

“Sheriff,” she replied with a nod. Her face held too much fear, and her eyes looked like she hadn’t slept much the night before.

“What’s going on?” he blurted, refusing a chair offered to him. “I’d rather stand for this conversation.”

His eyes fell on every one of the Morgan clan members. The elders were seated on the backside of the table closest to the back door.

“We have a problem, and we need your help,” Luca stated, taking over the meeting. Garrett found that odd since Drake was usually the head of anything relating to the clan even if they didn’t need an alpha to live like other shifters. There was a hierarchy in the family, and Drake was the oldest of the original owners of the clan.

“I’m assuming this has to do with Mara,” the sheriff noted, getting down to the business at hand.

“Yes,” she said, clearing her throat. “Last night, when I arrived home from work, Luca met me there, but he scented what we believe to be hunters.”

Garrett held his composure. He thought only Gaia and he knew exactly what Mara was, but he had guessed that wrong. If they were going to be asking him for help, he needed to be open with them or they wouldn’t trust him.

“So, they know what you are?” he asked, holding up his hand when everyone in the room growled deathly low in their throats. “I knew what you were the moment I saw you at the diner for the first time, and since there have been no deaths by vampires in my town, I never confronted you.”

“I guess I should say thank you for that.” She relaxed. “I didn’t come here to hurt anyone. I just wanted to live a normal life.
