Chapter Ten

Isla

The nursery was nothing like I’d imagined. Of course I’d heard about it before, and it had always sounded appealing to me, but this was far beyond what had been described. It was gorgeous. The main room featured a three-story ceiling and was covered in surfaces for every imaginable little nightmare to play on. There was padding on every corner and even above on all the windows for the nightmares that could fly.

There was a section for babies, which was a bit smaller, and then toddlers that we were currently in. Two female nightmares, Class D, were helping us process each child into the system, and I had taken the job of playing on the floor with three or four of them that seemed obsessed with my hair.

I didn’t mind; it was funny watching their little eyes light up.

I think one of the most endearing aspects of children was the purity of their emotions. Every single one flashed across their faces, and when they smiled, it was with unreserved, pure joy. And when they expressed love to you, you felt like you were their favorite person in the world. My eyes watered, wondering if my mother had ever felt that connection with me. I had a feeling that wasn’t the case.

After around half an hour of getting situated, I found myself sitting with Arabella as a small girl crawled between us, seeming to find it amusing to make little blue flames that lit up the floor and immediately extinguished. I must have been deep in thought because I didn’t hear Arabella’s question at first.

“What?” I frowned, realizing she was looking at me expectantly.

She smiled softly in understanding. “I just asked if the nightmares you arrived with were your team.”

“Oh no.” I shook my head, feeling embarrassed. “Just men I am…friends with?” I questioned my words myself. “They are Class As, and I’m a predicted Class C.” No need to explain to her the messy situation about my birthday.

“I understand.” Arabella nodded thoughtfully. “I must have read the situation wrong.”

“How?”

“I actually thought you guys were together.” She shrugged, her eyes lighting up with hope once again. “I don’t see a ton of relationships around here, let alone multiple men with one woman.”

“Oh.” I blushed. “No, I mean I wouldn’t be opposed, but… I am just a Class C, so it wouldn’t work.”

“Did they say that?” She frowned.

“No, but I mean mating-wise.” I shrugged.

Her eyes dimmed slightly as she nodded, offering a smiling sigh. “Wouldn’t it be nice if you could pick that type of thing instead of nature deciding it?”

“Yes,” I admitted honestly. I noticed her eyes stray to Zain and Razar, sadness flashing there before she looked back at me and seemed to shake herself.

“You know,” she continued, “it seems they need help in the nursery. If you enjoy it and you aren’t on a team, I bet they would love to have you help.”

“I wish,” I mused. Doing so would probably only serve to put these children in danger because of my mother.
