Chapter 11

“He’s never coming near you.”

“I’m not worried about Kai,” Dana returned breathlessly.

“You should be,” Lucian growled. “Vampires are dangerous. We’re dangerous.”

“I can take care of myself.” Dana pushed at the cage of his arms, the flash of anger clearing desire from her mind. She had her breath back, and she had had enough of Lucian’s domineering behavior. Why was he acting like he cared what happened to her? He said he hated humans, that they had no place here. She pushed hard against his chest, and he finally shifted back an inch to look down at her.

“Why are you acting like this? Like you care?” She hated the hitch in her voice. “Why go to all this trouble, get me accepted into the Sanctuary as your vassal, when you don’t even think humans should be here at all.”

“What makes you think that?” he said, frowning and moving back further.

“I heard you!” Dana said, gesturing towards the ballroom. “You told Aaron humans had no place—”

“Those humans,” Lucian said.

“Oh, those humans,” Dana rolled her eyes. “You realize I’m human too, right?”

“It’s different with you.”

Dana recalled for a second what Aaron had said about soulmates. But that was impossible. They didn’t exist. “How is it different?” she asked, biting her lip. “How am I any different from them?”

Lucian gazed into her eyes, and gripped her arms, pulling her back towards him inexorably. That feeling inside her bloomed once more, heat and a sense of protection. Why did his embrace make her feel so safe, so… loved?

“I never meant you,” he whispered, raising a hand to brush her cheek. “I meant those humans addicted to the bite. The humans preyed upon so often and so heavily by the vampires of this city, that they crave the bite just like any other addiction.”

Dana’s eyes dropped to his mouth, his fangs, glinting from behind his lips. Could humans really get addicted to the bite? How good must it feel? She trembled.

Lucian ran a hand up her arm, his broad palm smoothing over skin. Leaving tingling echoes of desire in its wake. “I never thought I could feel about anyone the way I feel for you. Let alone a human,” he said, his voice a low rumble, as if the words were being drawn from him. “Dana, what you do to me.” His voice was low and rough. “I tried to deny it, but I can’t anymore. I need you.”

Dana quivered under the onslaught of his words and his hands. Her own need echoed his. He felt this too, he felt this bond between them. His fingers slipped around her waist, sliding across the smooth silk of the dress. The heat of his hands radiating through the thin fabric. She trembled under his touch; her body opening to him. She’d never felt desire like this, never known she could want someone with every fiber of her body.

She was overcome; drenched in desire. Heat curling between her legs.

“Yes, Lucian,” she hissed, moaning as he curved his other hand into the small of her back, pressing her close against him.
