Adalyn

“Where do you want this, Jacqueline?” I asked, holding up the box of clothes. Jacqueline looked over her shoulder, narrowed her eyes, and gestured towards another pile. “Over there works. Thank you, Adalyn.”

I smiled and hefted the box towards the other stack.

We were working on setting up a clothing and food drive for a small town that had been flooded in the last storm. Even though a lot of our den was rebuilding after the same flood, at least those who lived outside of the den proper, we were doing our best to help others.

Nico and Cole were over there now, helping to literally rebuild homes. I would have gone with them, but they had both growled at me for trying to help lift anything. Little did they know I’d be doing lifting here. But Jacqueline and I weren’t going to tell them. The Heir of the Central Pack might be loyal to our Alpha, but she was a woman first and wasn’t about to let the boys push me down into a nice little bubble-wrapped home.

“Okay, we’re almost done here if you want to head over to the other den.”

I looked up at her and smiled. “I don’t have to. I can work a little bit longer.”

Jacqueline shook her head. “No, you already had plans to work on the antidote with Dara and the others. That’s more important than helping me lift a few boxes.”

I scowled. “Everything that we’re doing is important.”

“I know you can handle this as well as things at the other den, but it’s okay that you have to work over there. The Aspens have been at the forefront of ensuring that our Packs are safe. At least from this current threat. And you were and are an integral part of that. I’m not particularly jealous that you’re spending time with your friends in another den. You’re also helping here as much as you can. You’re being a good Alpha’s mate, Adalyn. A great one. You don’t have to feel conflicted that your loyalties are in more than one place. If we ever went to war with the Aspens that would be different, but we won’t. The four of us under this alliance are becoming one large Pack with four Alphas. We’re becoming stronger than I ever thought possible. Especially with how I grew up.”

I swallowed hard, surprised she was speaking about this. Jacqueline was private. So private that I’d barely said more than a word or two to her because she was focused on keeping the Pack safe and growing in its health rather than letting me know who she was beyond her title.

“I know you grew up with Cole. Outside the Pack structure.”

“He and his sister Dawn were some of my best friends. Douglas protected us.”

Douglas was now the Beta of the Pack. He was an older wolf and a good man.

“I don’t think Douglas ever thought he’d get a title. But why wouldn’t he? He protected us when we didn’t have anything.
