Chapter Nine

Cronin

I had been too distracted by Alice to notice until it was too late. Caught up in that moment, when I debated going in for a kiss, her bright eyes watching me imploringly… I missed what my teammates had sensed with seconds to spare.

One of the bullets grazed my ear and I felt the hot spray of blood seep down my neck as my instincts kicked in and I joined the others in their defense. My only concern was getting Alice and the other humans out of harm’s way, my huge frame pouncing forward to take any other hail of bullets that might find their way to us.

Someone screamed in shock and I heard the collective growl of my teammates. In a blur of movement, we reacted, almost before the Anticlaw group showed themselves.

My heart pounded as I counted them, almost subconsciously, their camouflaged bodies blending into the darkness. Some wore night vision goggles, others carried rifles. There were more there than I had ever seen at a single attack and my mind worked as quickly as my body.

With a quick thrust of my paw, I shoved Alice behind me, not bothering to see where she landed. I had not hurt her but I needed her back, along with the other humans. My eyes turned to look for the wolves and I saw they had already formed a chain as they moved forward, ears flat against their heads. To my right, I caught a blur of ebony movement as the panthers led an offensive attack. I wasted no time following them.

More bullets fired out and I heard someone grunt in pain but I could not be distracted, not when over a dozen men and women were swarming us from the forest.

Without hesitation, I attacked, my teeth gnashing violently to sink into the nearest human flesh. Howls of protest filled my ears but I moved from body to body, barely noticing the baseball bats and tire irons that pummeled my arms and legs. Nothing was going to stop me from keeping my team and Alice alive.

Searing pain ripped through my arm and I knew I had been shot but that did not stop me. I would not rest until every one of the human members had been disarmed.

“Get the bear!” I heard someone shout. To my left, I saw Dalton leap forward and as I turned to see, another bullet whizzed by me as the wolf made contact with the shooter.

There was no opportunity to absorb, only react, and that is what I did. With my teeth, claws, and powerful arms, I lashed out at anyone who did not belong among us, not pausing to take a breath. All around me, cries exploded but I knew instinctively that the Protectors were holding their own.

The fight ensued for what felt like hours, even though I knew it had likely only been minutes. One by one, we felled the assailants until they began to retreat, leaving their wounded and dead behind.

I fell back onto my haunches and unleashed an unholy roar that shook the trees around us.
