ATS Prescreen Questions

Prescreen questions typically are incorporated into ATS; either they are part of the application or are sent to potential applicants before or after application completion. Prescreen questions determine whether those who apply meet the minimum qualifications for the position and, thereby, truly are applicants. For example, a prescreen question might be How many years of experience do you have in human resources? If the position requires two years of HR experience, all candidates who apply and answer that they have less than two years of HR experience will be eliminated from further consideration for this position.

One of the most frequent reasons candidates are not considered past this initial selection step is their responses to ATS prescreen questions. Unfortunately, some who apply will be qualified but will not read the questions carefully and will be eliminated from future consideration—for example, responding “no” to Are you legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer? when the applicant actually is authorized. Another potential error is when a position requires a “master’s degree in industrial-organizational psychology” and a student who is soon to graduate answers “no.” If you will possess the degree by the hire date or in the next 90 days, respond “yes.” Note that employers may ask for a transcript confirming the completion of the applicant’s degree (Shoenfelt et al., 2017; Walker, 2009).
