Around four oâclock, Dadi put down her crochet needles. âIâve run out of green yarn,â she complained.
Iâd run out of energy, but I wasnât going to tell anyone. It was against the rules of Operation Super Athlete to complain.
Alexa and Marya had stopped practicing half an hour ago.
âCome on, Marya,â Hanna called out. âHave some rest.â
She was lying on the grass, and Alexa sat near her legs. They looked tired. I was dangling from the tree rope, so it wasnât my best look. Still, I shook my head. âCanât,â I panted. âHave to . . . practice.â
âYou sound like a zombie,â Alexa said, giggling.
I scowled. I didnât sound anything like a zombie, thank you very much. âA super athlete, you mean.â
âWhy are you so intent on winning?â Alexa asked. Then she paused. âThat means âdetermined.âââ
I scowled some more. It was hard to do when you were dangling from a tree, but I managed it. âI know what intent means.â
Secretly, I wondered if Alexa also had a Word of the Day diary. That would make her even more like me, which was a strange thought. So, I didnât think about it.
âYes, why, Marya?â Hanna asked.
I dropped from the rope and sat down on the grass. My hands hurt something bad. âBecause I want to be the best.â
âBeing the best is overrated,â Alexa said sadly. âLook at my dad. Heâs the best salesman in the city. He got an award for it and everything. But heâs never home, so itâs not a good thing at all.â
I sighed. It was hard to stay mad at Alexa when she talked about her family.
âIâll be the best, but Iâll still spend time with you two,â I told her, rolling my eyes.
She smiled. âThatâs good, Marya Khan. I like spending time with you.â
I blinked very fast. I had no idea what to say.
Thankfully, Baba saved the day. He stepped into the backyard, smiling widely. âHello, girls, you look exhausted!â
âFinally!â Dadi grumbled. âWhat took you so long?â
âI was working,â Baba explained. âBut I stopped to take you girls for ice cream. Seems like you had a hard day of practice.â
I jumped up. How did he know I needed some ice cream to make me forget my aching muscles?
âYay!â Hanna squealed. âIâm so hot.â
âThank you, Mr. Khan,â Alexa said very politely.
Dadi stood up slowly. âNot me. I want to go home and drink some tea.â
I helped her with her yarn and needles. I didnât want her falling down in Alexaâs backyard because she had too many things to carry. âThank you, Marya jaan,â she said, smiling. âIsnât it pretty?â She held up the thing she was making. It was bright green and strange-looking, like a cross between a sock and a sweater.
âEr, sure,â I mumbled.
We helped Dadi take her stuff next door while Baba waited in his car. The three of us trooped into my house. Mama took one look at us and said âWash up, please!â very sternly.
There was a small bathroom near the front door. Alexa, Hanna, and I took turns washing our hands and faces.
