CHAPTER THIRTY

(A Letter from Jane Bingley

to Elizabeth Darcy)

13 April 1813

Dearest Elizabeth,

I put no location on this letter, for to be honest I am not quite sure where we are other than aboard Charles’ flag ship, the Aurora, sailing back to England. The sea is calm now, which gives me this opportunity to write. Rest assured we are quite safe and looking forward to our return to Netherfield. Charles tells me we should be home within a fortnight. We have had a wonderful wedding trip, but I have missed you terribly.

So much has happened since we last saw each other on our wedding day (I love to say ‘our wedding day’). Mr. Bingley is everything I could hope for in a husband. He is forever looking to my comfort before his own in all things. I look forward to telling you about our experiences in Italy in great detail when next we are together, which I hope will be very soon.

Caroline Bingley planned to join us in Venice, but was deterred by the discomforts necessarily attendant to such extensive travel. She chose instead to stay in Charles’ townhouse in London. I will be honest and say I was not disappointed. I do hope to maintain a cordial relationship with my new sister, but tell you in confidence that her coming to us on our honeymoon would have taxed my nerves considerably.

They have rung the bell for dinner so I must close. I look so forward to the time when we may sit and talk together as we used to do.

I will add with haste that Mr. Bingley has insisted on hiring an Italian chef who is already on his way to Netherfield. I do hope Mrs. Tennison does not resign and they might work together harmoniously!
