“OKAY, YOU CAN OPEN your eyes now!” Kid Kaiju said.

A minute or so ago, he asked Louisa and Ms. Pratt to walk with him into the library parking lot. Louisa’s first thought had been, Is he going to show me his car? But then she realized that Kid Kaiju was only a little older than she was, and there was no way that he had a driver’s license.

“‘Curiouser and curiouser,’” Louisa said, quoting Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She felt a bit silly, as if she were playing a game like a little kid. Still she played along and now removed her hands from her eyes.

What she saw from her vantage point in the parking lot was not a car.

No, it wasn’t a car at all.

She didn’t know what it was.

“This is Hi-Vo,” Kid Kaiju said, pointing at a hulking, blue-and-white creature that crackled with electricity all over its body. Two bright white lights beamed where a person would have eyes. The creature even had a mouth, or what appeared to be one—it was a constantly sparking line of electricity that seemed to imitate a human smile.

“H-h-hello, Hi-Vo,” Louisa stuttered, finding herself waving in spite of herself.

In response there came a series of popping sounds from Hi-Vo’s “mouth.” It sounded like a shower of sparks. It raised its right hand and mimicked Louisa’s waving action.

“Hi-Vo is a…uh…new friend of mine,” Kid Kaiju said. It was always pretty awkward explaining the presence of a huge electricity-powered creature.

Louisa couldn’t believe it. She looked at Hi-Vo, standing there, right in front of her. Then she turned to Ms. Pratt. “How are you not freaking out?!?” she called to the librarian. “This…this is incredible!”

“I’ve met some of Kei’s friends before,” Ms. Pratt said warmly. “Not Hi-Vo, he’s new. But he seems just as nice as all the others.”

“He’s…Is he an alien, too?” Louisa asked, fascinated.

“No, he’s not an alien,” Kid Kaiju said. “More of a…well, I hate to say ‘monster,’ but I guess you could call him that. But he’s a good monster.”

“A good monster,” Louisa said. “That’s a thing?”

At the word “good,” everyone turned to hear a bark come from the library doors. Ash came running out, trotting up to Louisa, wagging his tail.

“Your dog doesn’t seem to mind Hi-Vo,” Kei said. As if in response, Ash looked at Hi-Vo and opened his mouth. His tongue lolled out, and he started panting.

Hi-Vo tilted his head, looking at the dog. Then he bent over, kneeling, still looking at Ash. Hi-Vo opened his mouth and imitated the panting, releasing a shower of fine sparks into the air around him. This delighted Ash, who started to run around in circles, jumping, as if trying to catch the sparks.

“He…he’s like a child,” Louisa observed.

“Kind of, yeah,” said Kid Kaiju. “Hi-Vo is here to help me. Us. His powers are all electricity based. He might be the only thing that can help us stop Trull.”

“Who’s Trull?” Louisa asked.

The look that Kid Kaiju gave Louisa made her blood run cold.
