Prayer was seldom a matter of dispute among Protestants, but their overhaul of late medieval modes of praying was rigorous and controversial. Using manuals and mnemonic devices like the rosary, late medieval people prayed earnestly and often to Mary and the saints; specific prayers might be rewarded with indulgences, as promised in devotional booklets like the Little Garden of the Soul. Published first in 1498 at Strasbourg, it was soon available in a German version that was adorned with fine illustrations and contained prayers to a host of holy figures for scores of personal and liturgical occasions. In the preface to his 1522 Personal Prayer Book, Luther sharply criticized the Little Garden and similar handbooks:
