Chapter Twelve

Azai

The look on Mars’s face when I held up those costumes had me choking back a laugh. I don’t think I’d ever seen our goddess completely bewildered before as she tried to make sense of the bits of fabric I held up.

“What in the ever-loving Aphrodite is that?” Zain asked, grabbing the furry one out of my hand. “Some kind of animal?”

Officer Tucker laughed. “I believe it's Chewbacca.”

Zain stared at him with wide eyes. “What’s that?”

“Star Wars,” I said, swatting him over the head. “From the movie?” How could he not know that? It was only one of the greatest franchises ever made . . . wait, where did that thought come from? I was a warrior from ancient Greece, not a fanboy. Oh . . . being Dan must have had more of an effect on me than I thought.

Pax reached in and pulled out a gold and brown costume, turning it over in his hands. “Is this . . . a gladiator?”

“Looks like it,” Mars said, bemusement in her eyes.

When I handed her the skimpy costume, she frowned as she plucked it from my fingers like it would bite.

“What exactly are those supposed to cover?” she asked.

Officer Tucker snorted. “No one will recognize you in those for sure, and you might not even attract any attention in Silver Springs.”

While the costumes were strange, I had to give Dan credit for his creativity. Ares would never think to look for us in these outfits. “It’s settled, then. If we have to stay in town, we’ll wear these. It’ll give us time to work on some strategy, if nothing else.”

“Great,” Mars sighed. “I get to wear another itchy wig.”

She really needed to get back into her element. She’d spent far too long running and alone. What she needed right now was to get back to training. When she fought Pax, there was fire in her eyes and I caught a glimpse of the old Mars. A little nudge was all it would take to get her back to her old ways.

We all separated to put our costumes on. It took some doing to get into mine, the fabric stretching tight across my muscles. I kept adjusting my junk, trying to get them in a comfortable position, but eventually I gave up. There was nothing comfortable about spandex. Especially when it felt like it was a size too small. I would have to deal with the perma-wedgie until we found something more suitable. Now I knew how Zain felt wearing Tobias’s pants.

When we came back together, I choked back a laugh. Poor Zain was stuck with the furry costume, hiding all trace of the speedy weapons expert. Pax wore the gladiator outfit, its fake muscles concealing his real ones. Mars was still changing into her costume on the other side of the car. When she stepped out, all of our jaws dropped. Very skimpy blue shorts hugged her ass, a white t-shirt stretched across her ample chest, and her long dark hair was tucked under a blonde wig streaked with blue and pink pigtails.
