Chinara

I didn’t know how I would function in this interview today. Verizon had finally called for a second interview and I couldn’t be happier. I didn’t tell Haji, because an interview didn’t mean I had the job. After I left the shower, I sent him a text. It had become habit to send him a text about ten a.m. just to say, thinking of you, baby. It was his first week back in over two weeks, and he’d been worn out. However, he wasn’t worn out enough not to kill my shit every night. I’d gotten so adjusted to him until I was begging him to hit me harder. Sometimes that shit brought tears to my eyes, but I was falling for his dick in a major way.

Besides that, he was a gentle soul, the total opposite of what I originally thought about him. I’d only been living with him a week, but it felt like I’d been knowing him for years. His persona was so laidback, I couldn’t imagine ever upsetting him again. After getting dressed an entire two hours early, I decided to finally call my family. My sister didn’t have an iPhone, so I couldn’t Facetime as Haji had done with his family and my parents didn’t have a phone at all. Since my sister still lived there, they believed they were fine without one.

I sent them two hundred dollars, but I didn’t think they’d received it just yet. I was still getting unemployment, but I didn’t have to spend a dime of it. Haji insisted that I use the card he gave me. As Daraja’s phone rang, I silently hoped she would answer. Just before I could hang up, I heard, “Pele o?”

“Hey, sis!”

“Chinara! We missed you so much! What’s been up?”

“Well, I met someone that’s been taking up quite a bit of my time.”

“Oooh,” she said, sounding like Megan thee Stallion.

I couldn’t help but laugh as she said, “Code for he’s been putting it down… blowing the back out… yeah?”

“Hush! Only for like the past week.”

“It’s about time! He must be really special.”

“He’s my fiancé, now.”

“Oh shit! How long have the two of you known each other?”

“A little over two months, maybe closer to three now.”

While I really didn’t start getting to know him until a week ago, that was what we told our family since that was when he’d first seen me. “Oh my God! This American man done came in and swept my almost nun-like sister off her feet! Three months, sis!”

I chuckled at her theatrics. “He’s not American. I mean, he’s a citizen but he isn’t from America.”

“Where the hell is he from?”

“He’s from Sierra Leone.”

“You got to be shitting me!”

I laughed loudly as she yelled for my parents. I could hear her practically running through the house. “Nara is engaged! And get this! Her fiancé is from Salone!”

I could hear my mama screaming in excitement, but my dad was extremely quiet. “Hi, Mama. Hi, Daddy.”

“Chinara! Engaged? I can’t believe it! Congratulations, baby!”

“Thank you, Mama.
