Chapter Twenty-One

Triton

Once we were alone, I kissed Lenna. Her lips sizzled on mine, the flame of desire sparking once again.

I held her when we broke apart and pressed my forehead to hers. I stared deep into her amber eyes, seeing a wealth of emotions swirling around deep inside of her. She stared back, her eyes looking from one of my eyes to the other. I wondered what she saw in mine.

“Why did you shed a tear?” I asked softly.

Lenna sniffled and looked down, now unable to meet my gaze. Moving my hands away from her cheeks, I grabbed onto her hands, which fit perfectly in mine. She smiled, and we leaned back to get better looks at each other.

“I’m sorry,” she began. “I just...thought of some memories I had buried while you and Myson were talking.”

“Memories? Of what?”

Curiously, she didn’t answer at first, but instead she let go of my hands and moved to the window where she could once again stare out at the vast city below. She crossed her arms and turned back to me. “Just, memories of when I was younger...and felt so very alone. I was wondering how I managed to get here, right in this very spot, talking to a king.”

“Being loved by a king, you mean.”

Lenna’s smile was pure beauty and set my heart on fire. I wanted to caress her shoulders, plant fiery kisses on her cheek and neck. She twirled a lock of her hair, her fingers working fast. “There’s just been one surprise after another. I was surprised when I approached you and you immediately took to me. I was surprised when you teleported us to your world. And, of course, I was surprised to hear you believe we’re fated mates.”

“I don’t just believe it, Lenna. I know it.” Stepping forward, I touched her shoulder, feeling my divine power settle inside of me. “You’re my rock now. I need you more than anything in this world. Even if you aren’t accepted at first by my people, they’ll come to love you eventually. And, if by some chance we come into conflict, I’ll protect you with everything I have.”

“That’s sweet of you, Triton.” She hesitantly placed her hand over mine. “I’ll do...the same for you. You’ve been so kind to me so far. I think I just miss my friends...and how simple life was before coming here.”

I nodded. “Homesickness. It’s understandable. In time, you’ll come to realize that I’m your home now, and you are mine. Your friends can come visit when everything settles down. Hell, if they feel like staying too, then I’ll let them stay.”

Lenna looked up at me with wide eyes. “Are you serious? Wouldn’t that only cause more problems?”

I cocked my head. “Of course it would! But, honestly, I’m beginning to not care anymore. If it’s for you, then I’d do anything.” I might have to act on that promise sooner than expected, once the Elders and others figure out I betrayed my prophecy. “If I need to include your friends in my protection, then so be it.
