Chapter Eight: Kiyuki

I was starting to do a little better—until I remembered my mortgage payment was due. Of course, Deshawn had stopped paying on it like he promised, and I couldn't exactly strip in my condition. I applied to a couple jobs, but once they saw me walk in six months pregnant, I didn't get them. They would act like it wasn't a problem, but then never call me. I was broke, tired, feeling fat, and depressed. I regretted the things I did more and more each day.

It was Monday, and I had a doctor's appointment for my baby. Initially I didn't want to know the sex, but now I was anxious to know what I was having. I hoped to have a boy, because I felt like a girl would grow up to be like me. I didn't want that at all for obvious reasons.

I called Deshawn to let him know I had an appointment, but he didn't answer. I just left him a voicemail reminded him of the address of the doctor, and the appointment time so that he would hopefully show up.

I walked into the doctor's office and to my surprise, Deshawn was already sitting there waiting. I stared at him for a bit, but he pretended not to see me. I continued to the front desk so that I could sign in and wait.

"Okay Ms. Allen, there is a fifty-dollar copay," the receptionist said.

"For what?" I frowned.

"For the appointment," she smiled. Why was she smiling? I was broke!

"I've never had to pay $50 in the past," I frowned.

"Yes, your insurance has changed and now they pay less," she smiled again, but more sympathetically this time.

"Look, I don't really have $50 right now," I leaned in and whispered.

"I'm so sorry Ms. Allen, we can bill you but that is an additional $20 fee," she replied. I dropped my face into my hands for a couple seconds, until a familiar cologne hit my nose.

"Here you go ma'am," Deshawn handed two twenties and a ten to the receptionist.

"You're gonna pay for Ms. Allen?" she asked dumbly, and he nodded. I looked up at him, but still he refused to look at me.

As she processed it, he went to sit back down. I got my receipt from her, and then went to sit down next to him. I looked over at him periodically, but he just stared straight ahead.

"Thank you for coming, and for paying the fee," I said, but he didn't respond. "The baby is kicking, do you wanna feel," I smiled when I felt my baby move.

"I'm straight," he finally replied to me without looking. I just decided to give up on talking to him.

We waited for about twenty minutes, and neither one of us spoke to one another. The only sounds that could be heard were the receptionist talking to people, the phones ringing, and the nurse assistants coming out to call patients to the back.

"Allen?" a gray haired Hispanic guy called me.

Deshawn and I stood up and followed him to the back.
