A FAMILY AFFAIR

Phyllis was steaming at what she just heard on the telephone. She slammed the phone down and leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes to help relieve the tension.

Carl had left a message in a manner that left no doubt in Phyllis’s mind that he was a certifiable nut case. “Phyllis, since you’re not accepting my calls, I’ll tell you what I have to say on your little machine. If you want a divorce, I’ll give you one. But I want a blood test to make sure that Zachary is mine.”

“Oh, obviously you don’t know who you’re dealing with,” Phyllis said to the phone as if it were Carl himself.

Just as Phyllis picked up the phone to call her lawyer, she was surprised by the presence of a familiar face in her doorway.

“Hi.”

“Well, hello,” Phyllis said as she stood and walked around her desk to embrace her younger sister, Grace.

“I had the hardest time finding this place. Why do they have you guys all the way back here?” Grace asked, hugging her sister.

“We’re prosecutors. After you sentence a person to twenty years, you need not be too accessible,” Phyllis said as she walked back around to her desk and sat down. “Have a seat.”

“Congratulations on your promotion,” Grace said, taking a seat across from Phyllis.

“News gets around fast,” Phyllis said dryly. “Thanks.”

“When I called to get directions, your secretary told me that you’re now the assistant district attorney.”

“Yeah, and I’m not looking forward to all the work that comes along with this job, but what can you say? So when did you get in?”

“Today. Are you going to see Jalen tonight?”

“See Jalen? Where is he?”

“He’s performing in a talent show tonight. He’s a rapper.”

“A rapper? I didn’t know he could even talk,” Phyllis said, as if she could care less.

Grace tried to control herself. “Yes, he can talk, he just chooses not to. You should come on out and see your nephew.”

“Where is this talent show?”

“At the youth center where Genesis works.”

“Where is that?”

“Over by Momma’s house. Are you going to come and support your nephew?” Grace asked, almost begging with her eyes.

“I’m not going in that neighborhood unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

“Phyllis, did you not grow up in that house? Don’t your mother, brother, and nephew live there?” Grace was trying her best to control her temper.

Phyllis sighed and stood, opened her desk drawer, and removed something. She walked over to the door, opened it, and said, “Let’s go.”

“Are you putting me out?” Grace asked, shocked, as she turned around in her chair.

“No, I thought you wanted to go to the talent show,” Phyllis said, smiling for the first time in a long time at her baby sister. She remembered a couple of nights ago when she wished she had Grace’s ear. Maybe this would be a start on repairing their relationship.

“That’s what I’m talking about,” Grace said as she stood with renewed hope.

“But before we leave we have to go and pick up your other nephew. How did you get here?” Phyllis asked as she held the door for Grace.
