Arjun tried not to look at his phone to see how long Rani had been gone. It felt like forever. She seemed really upset about Hema. Maybe Rani was getting too attached. He never started an affair without an end date in mind and would cut things off even earlier if he sensed that they were getting tired of each other. With Rani, he figured the hotel opening would be their last night together. They wouldn’t be working together anymore and he’d be returning to India. But he was more bothered by her behavior than he should be. He had gotten too close to Rani. Their affair had crossed the boundaries he normally set for himself.

When she returned to the table, he didn’t like the expression on her face.

“I insisted that we get a few courses at one time. I’m pretty sure the chef is so appalled that he’ll never let me back into this restaurant again.” He kept his tone lighthearted.

Rani took her seat. He reached out for her hand but she busied herself placing her napkin on her lap.

“What’s wrong, Rani?”

She sighed. “I’m wondering how long you’d planned for our affair to continue.”

The question caught him off guard. “Why do we need a specific date? I have been enjoying what we have. We can continue for as long as we are both liking each other’s company.”

What am I saying? Am I really going to continue on with Rani when I get back to India? He usually knew his mind, and didn’t give in to temptation. So why couldn’t he just tell Rani what he had planned for them?

“What about when the hotel is finished?”

“I’ll go back to India but I will be coming back to Vegas to check on things. And I have a great owners condo that’ll feel just like home.” He gave her his best smile.

“So, what, you want to continue this indefinitely?”

No, I don’t. He knew what she was asking and he was prepared with a response. So why was he hesitating? The answer became clear to him as she looked up at him with shining eyes.

“I don’t know, Rani. Obviously it cannot be forever. I’m going to marry Hema and I’m not a cheater. That wouldn’t be fair to you or her.”

“Now you’re thinking of Hema? You didn’t consider her when we first got together? Or of how I’d feel about her?”

“I’ve told you, Hema and I are just friends right now. She knows I sleep with other women.”

Rani blanched. “I can’t do this anymore, Arjun.”

“Do what exactly? Have dinner with me? Sleep with me? Work with me?” Why was his voice so sharp?

A tear threatened to escape the corner of her eye and he longed to touch her, but she scraped her chair back and stood.

“I think you and I both know that we can’t continue this affair.”

And with that, she walked out. He wanted to go after her, at least drop her back at her place, but his feet seemed nailed to the floor.
