Sixteen: Mark

“Oh, come on,” he said, rubbing my shoulders. “You can’t stay mad at me all day.”

“You threw me in the water.”

“I fell.”

The glare I gave him could’ve killed a man.

“Okay, fine,” he admitted. “I threw you in. But then you stayed there and swam with me for like twenty minutes!”

My face cracked, giving away my true feelings. “That’s because I was already wet.”

“Uh-huh,” he smiled back. “I think you just like swimming with a hot naked werewolf.”

He wasn’t wrong. But that didn’t mean I was going to give him the satisfaction. And I couldn’t be that upset either. Not only had he packed towels and a plush blanket for us to rest on, but he’d also snuck into the cafeteria and stolen an entire picnic somehow. I wasn’t even sure how he got it in the bag, to be honest, but there we were, naked and lazing in the sun with a pile of food beside us.

“This is surprisingly romantic,” I said from out of the blue. “Thank you for this.”

I must have caught him off guard because Dustin blushed deep red. “I… I just wanted to do something nice for you.”

“Well, I love it,” I replied, leaning in close so that my lips were inches from his. “It’s really cute.”

He pressed his lips to mine, passion seeping through his skin as he kissed me. “You’re really cute.”

“As cute as your old girlfriends?”

“Compared to them, you’re the most beautiful creature that’s ever lived.”

“Oh my god,” I said, giving him a shove on the shoulder. “Don’t ever stop giving me compliments like that.”

He laughed. “I’ll remember that.”

Sidling up beside him, I arranged myself so I was lying against his chest, the pair of us staring up at the bright blue sky above. Sunlight warmed our skin as I listened to the strong pounding of his heart under those dense muscles of his. Birds sang in the trees and it seemed as if the entire world stopped existing except for just us. I could have stayed there forever in uninterrupted bliss.

“Do you know anything about familiars?” I asked eventually, my fingers trailing absentmindedly up and down his forearm.

“Not really,” he replied, his hand stroking my damp hair. “I know some witches have them, but that’s about it.”

“It’s kind of like your mate bond,” I explained. “But it requires a magical contract between the two.”

“Are you asking me–”

“No!” I chuckled. “Hell no! We just started this.” I glanced up at him. “I like you, don’t get me wrong, but a magical binding isn’t something you enter into lightly.” I turned back toward the sky, closing my eyes. “I just mentioned it to say that I feel a connection with you, too. Witches feel that when they find someone compatible enough to be their familiar.”

“Is there only one familiar for each witch?”

I shook my head. “No. That’s why some witches have more than one. But that doesn’t mean I don’t feel strongly about you.”

“What does the contract do?”

“Basically, it lets me draw on your power in order to increase my own.
