Chapter Twenty

Nathan sat on a chair behind Lucien and examined the expanse of his back, following the chain, while Lucien played cards with Severin and Blake. He was sitting backward on the chair to allow Nathan room to move, and he sometimes turned with an amused look on his face. Nathan had pulled up two chairs next to him to hold the books and his computer.

Lucien half turned in his seat and held out a glass of red wine. Nathan took it, smiling.

“Thanks, it really is good.” He sipped at the fruity yet slightly bitter drop. Why someone would call it a drop he didn’t know—maybe because people weren’t supposed to drink huge gulps at a time? “I’m gonna get tipsy if I drink too much, though.”

“Nah.” Lucien placed the wine on the table for him. Nathan focused on the chain and had thus far found three possible languages and pictogram alphabets—one of which he identified from not knowing anything about it. So far he had identified Enochian, a language he didn’t know written in Phoenician, and something that seemed cuneiform, but not quite.

The butler came in. “Excuse me, sir. A Shadow has arrived.”

“Please,” Severin said and waved at him. James left and a man came in with a book in his hand.

“Severin, Blake. I have the book you asked to borrow.”

“How wonderful. This is my soon to be initiated protégé Nathan, and his Shadow Lucien.”

“Hi,” Nathan said, looking up. The man smiled and shook his hand.

“Lars. And I remember you from Thule,” he continued and shook Lucien’s hand.

“Yeah, you’re the Dane, right?”

“I am.”

“Would you like a glass of wine?” Severin asked.

“I would, because my master asked me to bring news. He said he had heard there was news to be brought back, that is.”

“There is. Invitations to the initiation of my protégé, for one. And a Thule Shadow has been claimed,” Severin said. The smile on his face made him look ten years younger.

“Fantastic! When, how, where?”

“A young woman came across him and claimed him. She doesn’t even know of our Order yet.” Severin still looked troubled by this, but hid it behind the task of pouring a glass of wine for Lars.

“Oh,” Lars said, accepting the glass. “Will the Masters be convened?”

“Yes. I hope to have her initiated as well, and I think it prudent for all of us to be able to ask the new Shadow questions. His knowledge might be what we need to stay ahead.”

Nathan had trouble concentrating on the chain, since the conversation involved him and Jenny, too, so he scooted forward and put his arms around Lucien and rested his chin on his shoulder.

“I’ll ask my master to get ready for the journey.”

“We will come to Europe. My protégé will be going to school there, I believe.”

“In Europe?” Nathan asked, straightening up.

“England. Professor Nigel Gershman teaches there, and I thought you might want to see if it was possible to be taught by him.”

“Absolutely!” Nathan got up to sit next to Lucien.

“So we must go there as soon as possible.
