âHere!â Heinrich pointed his chin toward a door close by. âThatâs one of the kitchens! It shares a wall with the main chamber!â
âExcellent.â Alex nodded to his golem. âClaygon, get the door, would you?â
A single blow of his massive stone fist opened the kitchen door, allowing him and the hyperventilating merchant to enter. âThe door⦠is open, Father.â
âGood work, buddy.â Alex floated in, leading his companions.
In the distance, hell-boar squeals echoed through passageways along with dull thuds from monstrous skulls hammering on reinforced doors. Beyond that, shrill demon voices grew louder as the chaotic sounds of clashing between demons and his summoned monsters died down.
âI think the enemyâs about done with my distractions,â Alex said grimly. âTheyâll be on us soon.â He indicated the wall on the opposite end of the cavernous kitchen. Gut-churning scents rising from massive ovens made him glad he didnât know what was being roasted. âKhalik, you think you can do it?â
âI think so,â the prince said thoughtfully, floating past a row of cauldronsâeach large enough to fit Grimloch, Brutus, and Claygon intoâbubbling with a ropey-looking green liquid. He touched the stone wall, closing his eyes, muttering an incantation. âYes. I can do it from here!â
âDo what, exactly?â Cedric demanded. âCare tâlet us dumb ones in on the plan, yâmasters oâstrategies?â
The prince turned, jerking a thumb toward the wall. âI will be using a spell to weaken and open the stone here.â
âThen Iâll have Claygon charge through it, breaking a great big hole in the side of their chamber.â Alex smiled. âThen we all rush in while theyâre caught off guard and⦠we break them.â
âAye⦠aye!â Cedricâs eyes lit up. âI like the sound oâthat! So, then we⦠huh.â He abruptly turned to the Sage. âSay, Drestra, Iâve got meâself an idea. Would yâmind helpinâ out witâ it?â
âIf it lets us kill more demons easily, itâd be my pleasure,â her voice crackled through her veil.
âAye, good.â The Chosen smiled. âWhy donât we give these little demons an even bigger surprise?â His eyes went to the bubbling cauldrons. âSomethinâ tâgrab their attention.â
âHold on now.â Hart looked down at Heinrich, his grin absolutely evil. âWhat about two more surprises?â
Now it was Alexâs turn to smile. âSee? Youâre already learning more about cooperating and using your resources. Ainât that a grand thing?â
Together, the companions hatched their plan.
