The road that Gallus chose to lead his soldiers along dipped five hundred feet into a valley beyond Gaba, then swung to the right. There were two villages in the valley: Beth-Horon Superior and Beth-Horon Inferior. The Jews couldn’t believe their luck; twice in their history, Jewish armies had defeated foreign invaders in the Beth-Horon Valley. Now it seemed that Jehovah was delivering another great victory to them. A large Jewish force hurried through the hills, passing the enemy and posting itself in front of the approaching Romans. Other partisans took up positions on the hillsides beside the road. Another force followed behind the slow-moving Roman column as it struggled along the narrow road with all its animals and heavily laden wagons.
