Logical Fallacies

In addition to errors of fact, an argument can be invalid for any number of reasons. Arguments that have factual errors are convincing only if one does not know the facts. This is common enough but also quite easy to overturn. More often, arguments that seem convincing are invalid because of logical fallacies, which are often referred to by their Latin names or their commonly used English equivalents:

• Non sequitur: Latin for “It does not follow.” The conclusion does not follow necessarily from the premises. A common form of this is the post hoc ergo propter hoc (“after this, therefore because of this”), where the fact that one thing happens after another is held as proof that the first thing caused the second thing.

• Burden of proof: Maintaining that the burden of proof for an assertion lies not with the person making the claim but with someone else to disprove it.
