SIEGE WORKS AT SEVASTOPOL, 1854 Despite heavy artillery support, Anglo-French land assaults on Sevastopol in 1855 initially failed, for the city was well defended. Moreover, the attacking Allied armies lacked adequate experience in siege craft and had to face a type of trench warfare. The Russian army was strongly entrenched outside the town, making able use of earth defences, and was supported by more than 1,000 cannon. The scale of warfare was indicated by the Allies firing 1,350,000 rounds of artillery ammunition during the siege, while the impact of the fire on the senses was conveyed by Thomas Molyneux Graves from outside Sevastopol in 1854: ‘A few days will show an immense number of guns in battery and when our fire opens it will be tremendous ... now I am so accustomed to the noise that I believe I could go to sleep in a battery when the enemy were firing at it.’ An observer added: ‘Heavy guns are pouring their dull broadsides on our straining ears.’
