Giardiasis

Giardia lamblia is a ubiquitous protozoan that causes diarrhea and malabsorption in humans. Giardia infection has been shown to lead not only to this outcome, but also to persistent diarrhea and to stunting, particularly in the developing world (Niehaus et al., 2002). The cysts of this pathogen are frequently found in manure, and the potential for transmission to humans is obvious, especially via direct contact with manure. A review of the literature did not reveal any confirmed human disease actually traced to spread manure. Indeed, a recent paper from Canada that examined reported giardiasis in humans, as well as land-use data and GIS techniques, found that reported giardiasis was linked to surface water supplies and rural areas, but cattle density and the intensity of manure application were not significant determinants of infection (Odoi et al., 2004). This author believes that it is most likely that this association is underreported, rather than nonexistent.
