Chapter 11

Merry sat in her luxurious room, her immense suite, dressed in the silly maid’s outfit and eating a ham sandwich that she’d brought up to her room for lunch. After her encounter with Jason, Eric and Connor the night before, she had decided to spend her day off cocooned in her room.

Gilded cage, she thought wryly as she looked up at the intricate molding that perfectly framed in the large space.

“Don’t knock it,” she told herself as finished her sandwich. “Things could be worse. I could be sleeping on the floor to that clinic.”

She got up and went to the balcony that opened onto the mountains. The cool breeze brushed her hair back and caressed her cheeks as she looked at her surroundings. It really was a spectacular sight and she’d become quite fond of the mountainous countryside as well as the friendly town where everyone knew one another.

“Yeah,” she muttered. “That’s all good and well, but what about the situation here.”

Down below, she saw the stable boy walk out with Maxwell. Smiling, she was pleased to see the great shire doing so well.

It was a breed of horse she knew nothing about. Had Jason not told her he was a shire, she would have assumed his was a Clydesdale.

“What do I know?” Merry had said when he’d told her.

As she watched the scene play out below, she knew in her heart what she had to do.

She quickly pulled on her boots and headed down the stairs. Passing through the halls, she heard Jason talking on the phone in the living space, and deliberately turned the other way to take the back exit out.

With determined steps, she went to the corral where the stable boy had left Maxwell.

“Well, look at you,” she said to the gentle giant. “All better?”

She patted his neck when he came to her. Of all the animals, he seemed to appreciate her the most. “Like the lion and the thorn,” she muttered. “Right, Maxwell?”

She then went on to go and visit with every animal in the stable. They all looked well fed, well hydrated and perfectly healthy.

Aside from Maxwell’s injury, she hadn’t had to do much with the large collection of animals; a few drops of vitamin here and a few capsules of medicine there.

“I’ll miss you guys,” she said as she looked in on the peacocks.

“Miss them?” Jason said from behind her as she knelt before the peacocks’ enclosure. “Where are you going?”

She slowly stood and turned to face him.

“I can’t stay here any longer,” she said simply.

She couldn’t believe she’d made the mistake twice already. Despite her mother’s advice, she’d slept with Phil, her boss, got engaged to him, and here she was again in a similar situation. After Phil, she had repeatedly told herself to never do such a thing again, and yet… barely a few days after running away from one boss, she turned around and fucked another boss.

Damn, she chastised herself. Will I ever learn?

“I don’t want you to go, Merry,” Jason said, his tone deep and heartfelt.
