5.11.2.3 Work Support Technology

The workbench is used for temporary placement of notebook computers, documents and other small items. It is mainly composed of joint arms and a working platform and is widely used in space station. The joint arm of the workbench has a standard interface, and the workbench can be placed on any position of the slide rail. The surface of the workbench is provided with hook and loop fasteners for placing articles. The workbench can be folded to save the space. The workbench is mainly used for the temporary application and easy disassembly and installation of the working area or living area. It can change its orientation according to the needs of astronauts. It can be divided into fixed-mounted type and simple type. On the fixed-mounted workbench, articles can be placed in any spatial position with an accessible length. But on the simple workbench, articles can only be fixed on part of the space.

The main function of the work chair is to limit the astronaut’s body when working and meet the requirements of long-term astronaut operation at the workbench. There are five kinds of work chairs in the International Space Station. These chairs are mainly used to limit the astronauts’ feet, thighs and waist to achieve a body position limit. Some of the work chairs are fixed on the floor, and some are fixed on the vertical rods.
