A deadline also provides a point for the team to consider the next phase. They’ll chart a path forward that begins with the next level of exploration and resolution, on the way toward innovation and ultimate refinement of the product.

We see further evidence in favor of fixed deadlines when we look at computational optimization. As we discussed in chapter four, an understanding of optimization algorithms—in particular, the numerical stochastic technique called simulated annealing—has been shown to be a good model of decision-making by design teams.28 Simulated annealing controls the transition from an effectively random search for a solution to a refined search that keys in on an optimum. Without getting into the mathematics of how the algorithm works, the important point is that, in traditional uses of simulated annealing, the schedule is fixed, leading to a complete solution in a predetermined time. Because the algorithm has similar properties to human design processes, including lots of swirl as search progresses, it formally illustrates the power of deadlines.
