4. Taking the Long View

Stepping back and describing the SKF experience in more general terms can add content to the bundling, standardization and new links dimensions in section two above. In order to capture parallel changes in these dimensions, the description is structured along a sequential development comprising three phases. These can be labelled defensive, offensive, and integrative respectively. Significant overlap makes the phases less than ideally distinct, but explicitly introducing time is both illustrative and practical. Experimentation and learning in the organization, on the one hand, and competition, on the other, propel the process. Cognitive limits of management and of the organization as well as implementation lags are retarding influences.8

These are general considerations and, indeed, there is reason to believe that this describes a fairly typical sequence, although the phases are modelled on SKF’s experience. The phases proposed are not mutually exclusive situations, but represent differences in focus and build on each other.
