Chapter Eleven

Tony wheeled his Lexus southward on Interstate 95 and headed for the Crescent Island exit. The smooth, comfortable luxury car was more than adequate when he traveled miles of highway. He usually drove the Explorer jeep while on the Island and reserved the Lexus for the mainland roads because of its comfort and reliability.

He impatiently waited half hour for the next ferry’s arrival at the Virginia port. When it arrived he drove the stickered car aboard. The usual thirty- to forty-minute ferry ride seemed more like a lifetime.

Tony arrived back at Gates Manor on a Wednesday, three days before the big Crescent Island July Fourth celebration. He parked his car next to the jeep in the spacious four stall garage and walked through the connecting door. He entered the house by way of the short hall that separated the pantry and laundry rooms. He'd been away for weeks, and now the prolonged absence and the thought of seeing Madison again had driven him impatiently through the doors.

She was in his blood. Night after tortured night he would relive their last night together. He felt the trembling of his passion as he thought about it. Maybe his imagination had gotten the better of him and he was making more of her in his fantasies.

Tony dropped his bags in the small breezeway and opened the door leading to the kitchen. He heard Eda’s soft humming as she stood at the sink mixing a pitcher of iced tea. He looked around, but she was alone. “Good afternoon Eda,” he said, closing the door behind him.

“Oh, Tony, you’re back. We didn’t expect you until maybe later this week.”

“How’s everything here?” He asked peering into the family room as he walked over to kiss her cheek.

“Quiet, right now. Are you hungry? How about I fix you a nice turkey sandwich?”

“No, I’m okay. Thanks anyway. Where’s my grandmother?” His eyes drifted toward the large bay window above the sink. He saw the expansive back yard and the glistening inviting turquoise blue pool water.

“They’re out on the water.” Eda answered absently as she concentrated on cutting paper thin lemon and lime slices.

Tony casually walked toward the sliding glass doors that lead to the back patio. He looked around, angling for a better view. “You said that they’re in the pool?” He opened that sliding door and stepped out onto the verandah.

“No, they’re in the boat out on the bay,” Eda yelled out after him.

A calm rush of warm air kissed his face as he stepped from the air conditioned kitchen out into the warm summer day. The hot humid days of Crescent Island summers were well upon them. He looked around - he would never grow tired of this view. He quickly crossed the back lawn and headed to the path leading to their private dock. As he rounded the last row of neatly sculptured hedges, he stopped, and was awestruck by the sight before him.

This would always be the most spectacular view. From where he stood he could see the breath-taking splendor of the Chesapeake Bay.
