Chapter 6

Reeling from shock, MacLir gathered his wits and approached the cargo hold. Whispered voices and pleas for silence preceded his arrival. When he opened the bay door leading to the hold reserved for fragile items, he found a defiant dark-haired Rhinemaiden sitting atop a crate of china, arms at the ready as elemental energy surged around her.

One she spotted him, Lorelei leapt to her feet and conjured a shield of shimmering fresh water to cover the expanse behind her.

MacLir longed for nothing more than to bang his head repeatedly against a rock, but gritted his teeth and said, “It’s no use, lass. I know they’re here.”

Lorelei’s eyes flashed as scales erupted across her shoulders and arms. Aye, Eridanos had been right then. This one was indeed on the cusp of gaining her full powers, and it seemed she had a temper to match that of her mother.

“I won’t let you take them, and I won’t let you cast them out into open sea, not unless you propose to cast me out as well.”

Great gods, her threat was that of a minnow to his shark, but she was serious. The lassie had courage, if not the brains and judgment to go with it. His instinct was to show her exactly what she was up against, but what would that accomplish? Bridget’s words still pierced his black heart and what remained of his conscience.

Forcing himself to calm, he sat on a nearby barrel of spirits and extended his hand, inviting her to do the same. She acquiesced, but maintained the water shield up along with her dander. He removed his hat and ran a hand through his hair, weariness catching up with him. Not that he’d be getting rest anytime soon. He still had a ship to put back to rights and Calypso to deal with.

Gods, what the bloody hell was he supposed to say to her?

Aye, well, first things first.

With as much gentleness as he could muster, he said, “Right, now then, tell me what this is about, lass.”

She met his gaze directly, though hers shone with unshed tears. “I had no choice. I had to save them. You must understand, these creatures—these nymphs and satyrs—well, they’re hybrids, you see. They’ve been kept against their will in neighboring river kingdoms as little more than slaves. They didn’t have the power to leave on their own.”

MacLir fought to keep his anger at bay, but not terribly hard. Was there no end to the trouble these blasted Rhinemaidens could bring upon him? “So you took it upon yourself to steal them from their masters and bring them aboard my ship, making me an accomplice to theft?”

And…she was back on her feet, hissing and spitting like the angry water dragon she’d morph into should she fail to put a leash on her erratic emotions.

“Masters? Masters, you say? So you’re with them, are you? The ones who think hybrids are nothing more than slaves simply because they’re part mortal, because they aren’t purebloods like
