ollowing the Nairobi women’s conference in 1985, activism at national and local levels to improve women's rights—

F particularly in the Global South—led inevitably to an arena where human rights became an essential aspect of the women's agenda. Women discovered that using the human rights paradigm could enrich the understanding and exercise of rights at the local level.

But at the beginning of that period, the idea of women’s human rights was not on the docket of many women’s organizations.

While the Nairobi WLD Forum did include the human rights of women in its analysis and program, it was largely absent at that time in the thinking of most women’s groups, human rights organizations, and the UN.

The announcement in the early 1990s of a UN Human Rights Conference planned for 1993 sparked the interest of women throughout the world and the women’s rights are human rights
