Chapter Five

And so it went. A day later, at six p.m., Angel was sitting alongside Sloane in the back seat of the bulletproof limousine, on the way to the band’s charity concert.

It had been a hectic couple of days.

She had spent the rest of the previous afternoon putting together the video for Vegas Dreams. Aspen had approved it last night and told her to upload it that morning after running some build-up tweets and Instagram posts, which Angel had dutifully done, although the wording of some of them had been vague enough that they could also have applied to Judah’s big upcoming announcement.

His promotion she had put together the previous evening. She had forwarded a copy to Judah, who had responded with a thumbs-up emoji and I’ll let you know when to release it. She had a sneaking suspicion he was going to make this gig his final one with the band, which was really going to piss Aspen off.

But then, it was pretty obvious Judah quite liked the idea of pissing Aspen off.

She wondered how it had got this bad. By now she knew that Vegas Dreams had been going for a long time—years, in fact. She had searched their name, their back catalogue, and knew how successful they had been—multiple sell-out tours, multiple triple-platinum albums. You didn’t make it that far if you hated one another.

But she had also discovered that Aspen had recently gone into record production. Maybe that was what had pushed Judah over the edge. Having a fellow band member suddenly decide to take charge of production might easily piss someone off. Particularly when, as she had read, Judah had been the primary songwriter of the band for most of the previous years.

She had noted a quote in one interview, when Aspen had been asked about his production work.

“We’re between tours at the moment. Judah’s working on some new material, but we’ve got time for our own projects. I’m enjoying discovering new talent.”

So it couldn’t really be much of a surprise that, while Aspen had been discovering new talent—such as their support band Urban Skin—Judah had been developing in a whole new direction. But it seemed as though the assumption was that everyone would drop everything now that the band were touring again, and clearly that wasn’t Judah’s plan.

He was going to strike out on his own, leaving the band behind, and she was going to help him.

Judah had obviously been planning this for a long time. He had said almost as much in the interview she had done with him.

“I’ve written a solo album, although I don’t have a name for it yet. I had just finished it when we announced our tour. The first single is already recorded and ready to go.”

“When’s it due out?” Angel had asked.

Judah had flashed the camera a smile. “It’s called Forget About Me, and it’ll be out next month.”

Forget About Me. How appropriate for someone who was ditching a tour and quitting his band. Somehow Angel had a feeling he wouldn’t be forgotten for some time.
