What’s important is identifying a situation or space or scenario that brings results, and then locking that in—until it no longer works. A few of the people I spoke to about rituals mentioned this, mostly in passing: Routines and rituals can change and shift over time. You need to be open to that, and once something stops working, think about what else might instead be necessary. Don’t try to keep forcing something if it’s no longer helpful. It’s essential you remain inspired. You want your rituals to remain special.

You need to pay attention to what works for you. You’re thinking about what you find comforting, or what can put you in a positive mental space, to make work and to succeed. You need to find a way to make it enjoyable or interesting or exciting enough to keep making time for it. It’s important to harness the energy, excitement, and momentum of the passion project without burning out or losing interest.

Once you think you have an idea of your rituals, try switching them up. If you find yourself working often in the morning, what happens if you try working at night? If it is effective, maybe you can find a second ritual. If it doesn’t work, why do you think it didn’t?
