When you have no idea how to even think of what to make, ASK FOR DIRECTIONS. Find a kid, preferably—one of your own or someone else’s that you see relatively frequently, so they can hold you to your promise to make the thing—and ask them what they’d like you to make. Make no promise to them other than that you’ll make it—don’t tell them you’ll make them the perfect thing, don’t tell them you’ll make them the best thing, don’t even tell them you’ll make them a special thing, and for the love of God, don’t tell them what you’ll make it out of, just in case your initial idea doesn’t pan out. (And for the love of your sanity, don’t accept a task to make any particular character from books, TV, or movies—about these things kids can be downright fanatical; best not to set yourself up to spark a tantrum from eyebrows the wrong shade of brown.)
