Chapter 7

Ruffians

Romo was shocked and he wasn’t sure how to handle things. His king had put him in charge of the investigation of Cretia’s attack and anyone who might be involved. Romo’s younger brother, Dirk, had accepted the position as Niku’s assistant and would also be investigating the attack while Niku concentrated on dealing with the rogues.

“So what’s wrong?” Bree spoke softly as Romo sat eating his breakfast.

“These ruffians are not what I’m used to dealing with. Dragons usually won’t attack a female like this. It is so against our basic honor. Protecting females is what we were born to do.”

“So you’re concerned if two of these rogues found it so easy to be brutal to a lone female, more violence might erupt?” Bree asked. She always got to the root of the problem.

“Yes, I fear our society is changing and not for the better.” The pictures Bree had taken of Cretia when they had found her while they waited for Betty to find the herbs she needed, lay in front of him on the table. Today, he would show them to the king and emperor. They needed to get the full impression of what these ruffians had done.

Whatever crime they were concerned that Cretia might have committed, she had paid for in full. Not that Romo felt being bullied and threatened into helping an evil family member was a crime. Cretia knew Dannia best and had felt the weight of her threats realizing they were not empty ones. The horror of what Dannia had ordered those males to do was captured in the pictures taken after the fact.

Romo was completely certain that those males had every intention of raping and brutally beating Cretia to death had they not been stopped. They might regret their actions and even say they would have stopped, but what they had already done would have killed a weaker female. Even Cretia might have succumbed to her injuries had Betty not given her aid right away. This was something he had seen on Earth on the news nightly, but no one from Earth was involved.

He had no way to explain the breakdown of two males raised among other dragons of good moral standing. How was it so easy for Dannia to corrupt a lifetime where they’d been taught proper ethics? Why had they gone from the norm on Draconis straight to the darkest behavior possible?

“Eat your breakfast, Mate. You will need your strength to get through today.” Bree instructed. Romo knew she was right.

“I know I need to oversee this. Regret would appear if I refused, but seeing the worst our planet has to offer will change me.”

“It will, but it will make you stronger and you will know you made this world better for our dragonlet by dealing with this evil.”

“You always know the right thing to say.” Romo pulled his mate into his embrace and one hand gently rubbed her stomach which was just starting to show a bump. Judging by how most mate’s pregnancies went, the bump would grow quickly.
