Julianne had breakfast ready when Blake entered the kitchen the next morning. She’d made a big batch of hot cakes, knowing how hungry the men were all the time. He poured himself some coffee and went to sit down.

“Good morning,” she said.

He nodded and sipped the coffee, looking at the table. “Where are Hank and Nolan?”

“Since it’s pouring rain outside, I think they decided to fix something to eat in the bunkhouse,” she said. “Isn’t that what they did last time it rained this hard? Are you planning to work in this?”

Blake shrugged. “There’re always things to be done.”

Shell came in, but immediately crossed the room and reached for his hat.

“Where’re you going?” Blake asked.

“Breakfast is ready,” Julianne said.

“I’m heading for the hospital. I want to see Ashley again.”

“Eat first,” Julianne suggested, dishing up eggs and hot cakes and adding several slices of bacon and sausage.

“I’m not hungry.”

“Might as well eat–visiting hours aren’t for a while yet,” Blake said.

Shell glared at his father, ignoring Julianne. He returned the hat to the hook and sat down. He ate as if he was alone, eyes firmly on his plate.

Julianne heard the echo of his heated accusations. Was he planning to ignore her in retaliation for her perceived crime? Wouldn’t that make their home life comfortable.
