“Miriam.”

It was so dark, and the voice sounded so far away. All I wanted to do was go back to sleep.

“Miriam!”

I wrinkled my nose and tried to get comfortable, but I couldn’t move my arms. Something chafed my wrists.

“SOLD!”

The booming voice startled me awake. My eyes flew open and were met with a terrifying world of scum and rank water. I was leaned against a slime-covered brick wall, and before me was a large man-made, or in this case probably dragon-made, cavern of sloped brick. The space was some hundred feet square and the ceiling reached forty feet above my head. The area was also packed to capacity, with wall-to-wall coverage of men and women. They stood in front of a platform some ten feet from me.

I wasn’t the only one lined up on the wall. There were some dozen other women, including Darda close beside me. I shifted and found my wrists and ankles were bound by a thick rope.

I turned to Darda. “What the hell is going on-”

“Next up for the auction!” a man on the platform called. He wore a robe of bright yellow cloth and swept one of his long-sleeve arms over our lineup. “A beauty snatched from the horrors of the streets and set within this gem of a place.” That got a laugh from the crowd. “I present to you for your delights, the Pale Beauty!”

A man in black garb with a hood over his head marched up to me and grabbed my bound wrists. He yanked me to my feet and dragged me up the short flight of stairs that led up to the top of the platform. The man stopped us in the center of the platform and faced me toward the crowd. Whoops, hollers and whistles arose from the crowd.

The auctioneer in the loud robes stepped up beside me and grinned. “I can see we have many interested customers. May I start the bidding at three drachma?”

“Three!” someone shouted.

“Five!” another called out.

“Five and an obol!” a man yelled. That got a laugh from the crowd.

The auctioneer smiled. “I see we have a very high bidder among us.”

“Six drachma!”

“Seven!”

“Humble Hubert.”

A hush fell over the crowd. My hooded captor stiffened.

The auctioneer’s face turned a lovely shade of pasty white. He hurried to the edge of the platform and swept his eyes over the crowd. “Who said that? Well?”

A single arm raised in the crowd. My heart skipped a beat when I recognized Tillit. The crowd parted for him and the hog-nosed man strode forward to stand before the platform.

The auctioneer glared at him. “Is this a jest?”

Tillit shook his head. “Nope. I call Humble Hubert.”

“B-but the auction! The drachma! My commission-”

“So you’re going against it?” Tillit challenged him.

The auctioneer swallowed a lump in his throat and shook his head. “N-no, of course not-”

“And I need another one.” Tillit nodded at Darda. “That one.”

“Whatta ya mean taking our girls?” a man spoke up. The green-skinned fellow from before stepped out of the crowd and sneered at Tillit.
