The Rusalki, as a group, had other bad habits, besides drowning people. On a whim, they could ruin a harvest with heavy rains. They also liked to tear up fishnets they found in the streams and to destroy dams and water mills. Some of them even stole clothes, linen, and thread from human women.

A traveler could protect her- or himself against the Rusalki and vila by carrying a few leaves of wormwood (Artemisia absinthium). People sprinkle this herb on anything that these creatures might steal or destroy. If a stream or pond got infested badly with Rusalki or vila, great quantities of wormwood were sprinkled on the waters.

The Rusalki and vila are far too dangerous for a magician to become involved with.
