Chapter 8

In the months he’d hunted Hana, he hadn’t realized how naive she was when it came to sex. She and the girls had been on the run to save their lives. It appeared his mate was in new territory, one she didn’t have experience in.

“Would you like a drink before we go to my room?” he asked.

Hana looked like a doe caught in the headlights. He collected a bottle of red wine from the rack and two glasses. He handed the glasses to Hana and took possession of her free hand. She shuffled her feet as they walked to the back of the house where his room was located.

His quarter’s bare surroundings hadn’t bothered him when he first arrived, but he wanted a warm environment for his mate. If he’d known Hana would show up, he would’ve made the bed this morning. Maybe he should’ve taken two bottles of wine.

He’d chosen a bottle with a twist top, eliminating the need for a corkscrew. It would’ve been embarrassing if he’d destroyed the cork. Zach had little experience with the things. After opening the bottle, he poured two full glasses and handed her one.

She sat in the only chair in the room. It took some of the pressure off since she hadn’t situated herself on the bed. There wasn’t any reason to rush into the physicality of being soul mates.

“Did you grow up in Afghanistan as folklore indicates?” he asked. He’d chosen a question that would be easy for her to answer, not wanting to cause her any more discomfort.

“We were in an isolated location in the mountains, although it didn’t stop raiders and finally the Brethren from attacking,” she replied. “Sheba lost her husband and two sons. The village suffered casualties over the years, but our dragons survived.”

“What about Fatima’s visions?” he asked.

“She didn’t start having them until she turned thirteen and there wasn’t always time to react before the village was attacked,” Hana shared. “Our magic and dragons saved as many of the villagers as we could. Every loss was hard to bear.”

He wanted to comfort her, but he wasn’t prepared to touch her as of yet. Once he went down that road, he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to stop.

“I’m sorry if I caused you to relive painful memories,” he said.

Zach watched as she took a sip from her glass. How he longed to kiss her wine-stained lips. She cast her eyes downward. He sensed her sorrow.

“Where the descendants of Eden’s Dragon are concerned, male or female, there are only painful memories,” Hana stated. “Our brother-cousins are psycho zealots who have no lives. They live for killing and perpetuating their numbers. We both know the burdens our sister-cousins have to bear.”

Hana rose and moved to stand in front of him, her back to him.

“We’re the answer,” she said. “Unzip this awful dress. I can barely breathe.”

He did as she requested. After gathering the material together, he unzipped the garment and watched as it fell to the ground. She only wore panties that were barely there.
