Reo

Gritting my teeth, I suck into my body the high-voltage energy coursing through Dorothy. In consequence, my system goes completely haywire, and it’s by pure, sheer will that I don’t enter survival mode.

There’s a snap before the barrier releases her hand. I lose my balance with the momentum, falling on my back with Dorothy on top of me. The electric current vanishes, but it takes me a few seconds to recover.

Shouts immediately follow, and suddenly, Dorothy is lifted from her prone position. With a grunt, I lean on my elbows as I attempt to control my breathing and bring my pulse to normal. My nose picks up the scent of ozone—something that only I, and perhaps Kevvan, can sense.

“What the hell happened?” Prince Lennox asks.

At the same time, Darius asks, “Dorothy, are you okay?”

He was the one who pulled her from me. She’s staring at Scrawny, wide-eyed, while her chest rises and falls rapidly. A quick scan of her vitals tells me her heartbeat is way too fast.

“I’m fine. I think.” She glances my way. “Reo?”

“I’ll be okay in a moment. I just need a second,” I reply.

“Hmm. Guys, what about that gaping hole Dorothy made in the barrier?” Princess Esmeralda points at the spot.

Prince Lennox moves closer to the gap to inspect it. “I can’t believe this.”

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to punch a hole through that. Everything was normal when I touched the energy field … until …” Dorothy’s voice trails off as she glances at her medical bracelet.

“Until what?” Darius follows her line of vision.

“Until I received my medication.” She steps away from Scrawny, turning her back on him. “I don’t understand. I wasn’t due for another dose for a few more hours.”

With my eyes trained on her and on scan mode, I see the exact moment her heart skips a bit, only to continue beating at a rapid pace. I’ve seen enough. I jump back onto my feet and approach Dorothy.

“Do you think the medicine triggered the surge of energy from the barrier?” I ask.

She lifts her face to mine, her beautiful eyes shadowed by worry. “The same thing occurred when I was trying to give life to the starship. Nothing happened until I received my medication. Then, I felt my life being sucked out of me, just like I felt now.”

“So, there’s a link between your drug and the crystals,” Darius says.

“The medicine levels are lower than they should be. It’s possible that, on those two occasions, contact with the crystals triggered the release of my medication. But why?” she asks.

“What exactly ails you?” I watch her closely. She has only mentioned she has a few weeks to live, not what kind of disease she has.

“It’s called Kramer’s Anomaly, a rare genetic mutation that causes my cells to wither and die.”

“And what exactly does the drug do?” Darius asks.

“It gives my cells a booster of sorts. But the doctors from where I come from told me the medicine would cease to have any effect soon.
